A guide will await you outside the Venezia S. Lucia railway station, near the statue of the Immacolata, with a sign bearing the name of the tour. After that you will leave on foot for the Jewish Ghetto.
The first stop will be at the Jewish Ghetto, founded in 1516 to control the Jewish community in the city, which was very large. It is the first example of a ghetto in the world. Its history is rich in events and anecdotes, inextricably linked to the events of the people who resided here.
The tour will then continue towards the Misericordia Church.
The Church of Misericordia is in sestiere Cannaregio and there is evidence of its presence since the year 936 even though over the centuries it has been constantly renovated.
Since 1973 it has been deconsecrated, and in recent years it has been used as a location for numerous cultural events.
The guide will explain in detail its history and the architectural/artistic peculiarities. You may admire the beauty, still intact, of its facade and interior.
At the end of this stop, you will walk along Strada Nova.
Strada Nova is an important pedestrian main road in sestiere Cannaregio connecting the Santa Lucia railway station to Rialto.
Its origin is recent, dating back to the nineteenth century. The construction works devastated the ancient urban planning of the area, deeply changing its appearance and viability. Today it is a place full of stores and restaurants, with a lively and dynamic atmosphere, but it is also home to numerous churches and palaces of precious historical and cultural value.
The walk, enhanced by the guide’s explanation, will have Campo San Bortolomeo as its destination.
Campo San Bartolomeo is located downtown Venice, in the sestiere San Marco, near the Rialto Bridge. Here the guide will describe in detail the history of the area: the commercial heart of the city, very busy and home to important businesses.
You will have the opportunity to cross the city’s most famous bridge: Rialto, dating back to 1591. A perfect place to admire the Grand Canal, the longest and widest canal on the island, and to take beautiful photos.
The tour will continue towards the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
The imposing Gothic-style Basilica is located in the sestiere Castello and is known as the favorite burial place of a large number of Doges and other illustrious Venetian personalities. This is why it is also nicknamed the “pantheon” of Venice.
Your guide will tell you in detail about the history and vicissitudes of this great building, which was built following a religious vision of Doge Jacopo Tiepolo.
Our tour will end here, in an area perfect for enjoying an aperitif with friends, just a 10-minute walk from Piazza San Marco.
Returning as a group to the Venice Santa Lucia railway station is not planned.
